Rufus Porter Museum

Rufus porter was an artist, musician, teacher, inventor and founder of Scientific American magazine, Rufus Porter, thought well ahead of his time. Porter (1792-1884) began his artistic life as a painter of portraits. Later he painted the murals that have made him famous.

Karolik Collection of Eighteenth-Century American Arts in 1939 established the MFA as a major repository of colonial and federal furniture, paintings, silver, and other objects from urban centers.

Bethel Historical Society


Founded in 1966, the Bethel Historical Society provides visitors with a doorway to the past from its Regional History Center in the heart of historic Bethel Hill Village. The Society's Regional History Center consists of two adjoining properties on Broad Street — the 1821 O’Neil Robinson House and the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House, both listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Dr. Moses Mason house is home to Rufus Porter Murals in an excellent and original condition. Thank you, Bethel Historical Society.

The Museum has more than 3 million artifacts in its collection. Information and photos of selected objects is available in the online collections database. The database is a work-in-progress and new items will be added regularly. A separate database covers archival collections.
